(Construction) – The New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (Chinggis Khaan International Airport), which was constructed by the Mongolian government with Japanese official development assistance, opened on June 4th.

The construction work was awarded to Japanese companies Mitsubishi Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation in 2013. Japanese companies such as Narita International Airport Corporation will be involved in the 15-year operation of the airport. The airport is located on a grassland about 50 kilometers southwest of the capital Ulaanbaatar, and was built with an investment of about 75.7 billion yen (including 65.7 billion yen in yen loans). About 3 million cubic meters of soil was moved to create the land, and a 3,600-meter runway was constructed. The passenger terminal building with the total floor area of 35,300 square meters has six boarding bridges and can accommodate two million passengers per year.

The 3,700 tons of steel frame for the passenger terminal building was supplied by JFE Engineering, which was also responsible for the construction. Special equipment for the airport such as air traffic control and fueling was also supplied by Japanese companies. The operation and maintenance of the terminal will be carried out by New Ulaanbaatar International Airport, a joint venture established by the Mongolian government and four Japanese companies: Mitsubishi Corporation, Narita Airport Corporation, Japan Airport Terminal Co. and JALUX. The Japanese companies hold a 51% stake of the firm, while the Mongolian side holds 49%. (2021/07/05)
